THE BLOODY BEETROOTS: THE BELGIAN CONNECTION

DSC_4946

Just to be clear: The Bloody Beetroots are a duo when they play live, but it’s actually one person who makes the music. And that person is Bob Rifo, also credited as Sir Bob Cornelius Rifo. But that’s not his only alias. As Bobermann he makes remixes for other dj’s that are different from the ones he makes for The Bloody Beetroots.

This story starts in 2006. The Belgian electroband Goose release their album ‘Bring it on’. It was their first album and it was an important one. They had to prove something, as they won the Humo’s Rock Rally, one of Belgium most important music competitions, in 2002. ‘Bring it on’ was a Belgian chart success, followed by a performance on Rock Werchter 2007. Although all tracks were brilliant, they begged for a remix. The Bloody Beetroots remixed two tracks of them. The instrumental track ‘Black Gloves’, which has vocals on the remix and ‘Everybody’. Both tracks can be found on the album ‘Bring It On (Rarities and Remixes)’, available on iTunes.

And then there was Sound of Stereo. The Belgian dj-duo emerged in 2009, with gigs all over the world. Their EP ‘Heads Up’ became a big success and featured remixes from Mightyfools and others. But the biggest remix was the one from The Bloody Beetroots. ‘Heads Up (The Bloody Beetroots Remix) was featured on Solid Sounds 2009 – Volume 1, one of Belgians most important dance compilations. Sound of Stereo is a duo, consisting of Jochen Sablon and Vincent De Boeck. According to their Facebook fanpage, they play Fidget, House, Crunk and Dubstep. That same Jochen Sablon is an important contributor to ‘Romborama’. He co-wrote ‘Better DJ on 2 Turntables’, the 6th track on the album, alongside Bob Rifo himself.

Bob Rifo has more than one alias. As Bobermann he remixed ‘Death Suite’, the result of an anticipated collaboration between Erol Alkan and Boys Noize. That remix could be downloaded for free from different websites. Later on Bobermann remixed the track ‘Drummer’ by Boys Noize. Recently Bobermann presented his newest remix ‘Mitsubitchi’, a track by another Belgian electroband The Subs. A remix he was very proud since he posted it on his website, www.deathcrew77.com. Yes, here are the Belgians again. The Subs, originating from Ghent, released their first album in 2008. The singles ‘Kiss My Trance’ and ‘Music Is The New Religion’ were a chart success, although their music videos might have something to do with that. NME gave them a 8 out of 10 rating, pretty high for a relatively unknown Belgian band.

The Bloody Beetroots already played a lot of important Belgian dance events. They played the influential Pukkelpop festival two times in a row, in 2008 and 2009. The dancehall was packed in 2009, the crowd went crazy. It was a much talked about gig afterwards. Belgium is famous for the ‘I Love Techno’ festival, taking place in November. The Bloody Beetroots played a dj-set in 2008 and 2009. At that time, the music video for ‘Warp 1.9’ was played on high rotation on the popular radio and television stations. ‘Woop Woop’ became a common shout-out at parties.
